Botswana: This landlocked
country, with a surface area of approximately 582 000 square kilometres,
is well known for ts abundant natural resources.
Strict conservation policies have resulted in the preservation of
these natural resources and maintained the undisturbed eco-system.
17% of the total land area has been set aside for wildlife conservation
and Botswana has adopted a high cost, low volume strategy, which
is intended to preserve the natural resources and promote sustainable
utilisation of these resources
Botswana boasts diverse wildlife and rich
cultural heritage.
The world-renowned Okavango Delta, which is the largest inland delta,
measuring, approximately 16000 square kilometres, is home to a wide
variety of wildlife and plant species. It is believed that there
are over 300 bird species, making bird watching abundant in the
Okavango Delta. There is also a wide variety of fish species. Game
viewing can be very interesting, with rides on mokoro (dug-out canoes),
or on safari vans.

Tourists can experience first-hand the wonder of the Delta palm
forests, grasslands, island flood plains and lagoons. Accommodation
in the delta is not a problem, as there are a number of first class
lodges and campsites available.
Home to one of the world's largest elephant populations (approximately
100 000), the Chobe National Park remains natural and undisturbed
- which is why former President of the United States, Bill Clinton,
and his wife chose to holiday here. Actress Elizabeth (Liz) Taylor
remarried Richard Burton at Chobe Game Lodge.
The Moremi Game Reserve, covering approximately 20% of the Okavango,
is well endowed with a variety of wildlife. There can be no better
safari experience than Moremi, where only 4x4 vehicles can survive
the rough and sandy roads. Animals seen here include buffalo, cheetah,
wild dog, hyena, jackal and several types of antelope.
The Kalahari Desert covers about three-quarters of the western part
of the country. This is a beautiful wilderness landscape characterised
by heavy sands, which form huge sand dunes. The area's vegetation
consists predominantly of shrubs, acacia and open grassland.
The Central Kalahari
Game Reserve, Khutse Game Reserve and Kgalagadi Transfrontier
National Park make up the Southern Parks complex, which is the third
largest reserve in the world. It also boasts a variety of game,
and the best time for game viewing is between November and April
when animals gather in the unique pans and valleys.
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park, which is the result of
a merger between Bostwana's Gemsbok National Park and the Kalahari-Gemsbok
National Park in South Africa, is a unique area where there is excellent
viewing of predators such as, lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena,
as well as gemsbok, springbok, hartebeest, eland and wildebeest.
The Transfrontier National Park, which opened officially on 12 May
2000, is the first initiative of its type in Africa.
The Tsodilo Hills showcase approximately 4 000 prehistoric rock
paintings, consisting of animal and human geometric designs. This
is a very attractive area that is appealing to researchers in biodiversity,
hikers and adventure seekers. Game includes kudu, leopards, ostrich
and monkeys. Tourists experiencing the tranquility of the Okavango
Delta in mokora's.
There is also the Makgadikgadi National Park, which is approximately
7 300 square kilometres. This is a fascinating place with salt-naked
surfaces. Remains of the palaeontological 'super lake', which covered
most of Northern Botswana, still lie here as a wide dry expanse
covered with salt.
Adjacent to the Makgadikgadi National Park
is the Nxai Pan National Park, which is home to thousands of wildebeest,
zebra and gemsbok, another place to visit. Travellers to this area
are sure to enjoy the sight of golden sands as they drive along
the park about 136km from the Maun - Nata road. Just outside the
park, to the east, lie the famous Baines Baobab. Situated in the
eastern part of the of the country, the Tuli block, with its fascinating
history and diverse game and birdlife, is another must-see.
The country also offers attractions like the David Livingstone Memorial
and Lenao Ie ga Matsieng - the ancient footprints on the rocks.
